Presenters:

ALEX TILLER (SHE/HER)

He Said, She Said, They Said: Gender Identity, Displayed Emotion, and Perceptions of Sexual Assault

Supervisor: Dr. Kristine Peace

Alex is in her fourth year of a BSc Honours major in Psychology. As a part of the queer community, she knows of countless queer folk who are survivors of sexual violence. Unfortunately, academia has yet to address these high rates of victimization meaningfully, as gender minorities are often left out of sexual violence research. Despite the relative newness of gender and sexual minority research in psychology, she believes that researchers have a responsibility to amplify the voices of the queer community to help increase understanding, intervention, and ideally prevention of sexual violence in these vulnerable communities.

JAPKARAN SAROYA (HE/HIM)

We’re Queer and We’ve Always Been Here: The Impact of a Virtual Queer History Tour on 2SLGBTQ+ and Cisgender Heterosexual Young Adults in Alberta

Supervisors: Dr. Eric Legge, Dr. Kristopher Wells, Dr. Laura Offrey

Japkaran is a fifth-year Honours Psychology major. He is interested in the field of LGBT psychology and mental health among 2SLGBTQ+ young adults. Outside of academics, Japkaran is an avid pop-culture connoisseur and loves to create art in different mediums.

NOELLE KILBREATH (SHE/HER)

What Does Allyship to the LGBTQ+ Community Mean?

Supervisor: Dr. Laura Offrey

Noelle is in her fourth year as a Psychology major and a Gender Studies minor. She is an athlete on the MacEwan women’s basketball team and is originally from Calgary. She is thankful for the opportunity to research LGBTQ+ allyship as it encompasses her heart for social justice, her desire to understand privilege and dismantle oppression individually and systemically, and the practice of science.

This event is part of Pride Week 2023, where MacEwan University recognizes and celebrates the diversity of our 2SLGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, and allies.

Event Listing & Graphics Disclaimer

PrideEdmonton.ca is a free, unfunded, volunteer-run community listing platform. We do not generate revenue from our services and do not receive funding or grants from community or government sources. All events and accompanying graphics are submitted by independent organizers.

Many organizers operate with little or no budget and may use a variety of tools—including AI-assisted design—to create their materials. PrideEdmonton.ca does not create, edit, review, or regulate submitted graphics, nor do we assess how they are produced.

Our focus is on ensuring broad visibility of the many Pride events happening across the region. Showcasing this diversity of programming helps build awareness, strengthen community connection, and foster greater understanding and acceptance. Responsibility for all submitted content rests solely with the event organizers.
