SUMMARY:Len & Cub Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Leonard “Len” Keith and Joseph “Cub” Coates were a queer couple in the rural New Brunswick village of Havelock in the early 20th century. Len & Cub features Len’s photos of their life and tells the story of their relationship against the background of same-sex identity and relationships in rural North America of the early 20th century. While keeping their sexual identities closeted\, they captured their decades-long relationship via photographs. This remarkable material is as important socially and historically as their story is one of the oldest photographic records of a same-sex couple in the Maritimes.  \n\n\n\nWe invite you to witness the unique love\, friendship and lives of Len & Cub to challenge contemporary ideas of about sex and gender expression in the early 20th century. \n\n\n\nCurated by Meredith J. DESCRIPTION:A production of Théâtre la Seizième \n\n\n\nTEXT AND INTERPRETATION: Joey LspéranceDIRECTED: Esther Duquette \n\n\n\nAs children\, Joey and Michel loved to put on shows for their family and friends. It was otherwise difficult to show their true colors in the working-class Quebec of the 60s and 70s where they grew up. To free themselves from this harsh reality\, Michel and his brother Joey found their way in the artistic scene. The latter pursued a prolific acting career in Vancouver\, while Michel shone on the Montreal drag scene. Then came the ultimate liberation: Michel became Michelle\, the woman she had always been\, deep down. Until the day when external forces got the better of her true identity. Is it possible to truly flourish when we don’t fit the roles that society imposes on us?  \n\n\n\nThis first autobiographical solo by actor Joey Lespérance paints a portrait of a courageous and marginal journey full of contrasts. Hear about things like Delwin Vriend\, early attempts to change the Individual Rights Protection Act\, the Lake of Fire\, and so much more. Alberta governments haven’t always had our backs as a community\, but we have never been silent. \n\n\n\nNot familiar with our tours? Attending the conference and not familiar with the city? Don’t worry. Our friendly guides will explain everything you need to know before we start\, but you’re looking at a 90-minute guided walking tour\, rain or shine\, and our knowledgeable guides encourage interaction and are able to tailor the talk to the group. \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to be able to provide ASL interpretation for this walking tour.
