SUMMARY:The Gay Straight Jacket Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Gay Straight Jacket \n\n\n\nCanada 1981\, 28 min\, Dir: CBC Edmonton \n\n\n\nTHE GAY STRAIGHT JACKET is a 1981 CBC Edmonton television special that provides an unprecedented look at the city’s gay and lesbian communities at a time of heightened visibility and vulnerability following the Pisces Health Spa bathhouse raid. Through candid interviews with gay and lesbian Edmontonians\, religious leaders\, and community members\, the documentary offers a multifaceted view of the social and political climate of the early 1980s. It features rare footage from iconic spaces such as The Roost (1977-2007) and Flashback II (1977-1989) and includes a striking segment on cruising culture near Bellamy Hill. The film captures a pivotal era in Edmonton’s gay and lesbian history\, preserving voices and spaces that shaped a generation of local activism and community life. \n\n\n\nThis is a special Pride Month screening of THE GAY STRAIGHT JACKET\, featuring a curated introduction\, a panel discussion with local historians and activists\, and a public Q&A. SUMMARY:Nextfest 2025
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a unique experience that will make you say “wow!” Nextfest is the festival for you. \n\n\n\nNextfest is a multi-disciplinary arts festival in Edmonton put on at The Roxy Theatre (10708 124 St). Over the eleven days of the festival\, Nextfest showcases the work of emerging performing\, dance\, film\, music\, and visual artists. Nextfest has more than forty different events\, performances\, galleries\, workshops\, mentorship opportunities\, and infamous Nite Clubs for you to enjoy. Your next ‘best experience ever’ is waiting for you\, take a chance on Nextfest! \n\n\n\nJoin in on the best fest on this side of summer by embracing the experimental with us and uplifting new works. Take a risk on an experience\, make some friends\, and see creations that come straight from the minds of the next generation. Many of the artists taking part in nextfest are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community\, and several of our events present 2SLGBTQIA+ stories such as: \n\n\n\n\nParody of a Person on Friday\, June 13 at 4:00 pm – a theatre progress showing of a musical day-in-the-life satire about gender roles\, identity\, and the high price of meeting expectations. You’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, you’ll suddenly ask yourself why you’re rooting for murder\n\n\n\nJINXXX on Friday\, June 13 at 9:30 pm – an 18+ queer nite club that will invite attendees to don their most cursed attire to brush elbows with lady luck and indulge in music\, performance\, and art. Subvert your superstitions with immersive installations\, roving entertainment\, and a main stage showcase in the Nancy Power Theatre\, before dancing your demons away with a midnight DJ set!\n\n\n\nThe Puppet Master: Burlesque\, Drag\, Puppetry and Live Music on Wednesday\, June 11 at 8:00 pm\n\n\n\n\nNextfest marks the beginning of a long creative journey for a huge array of artists. For more than twenty years\, we have fostered the growth and learning of thousands of artists who continue to practice and create on Treaty 6 land. We embody the spirit of newness and growth while respecting the deep roots planted by those who came before us. We are a platform for emerging artists\, a meeting ground for community\, a springboard for creative invention. Mentorship\, inclusion\, learning\, creative risk\, and vulnerability are at the core of everything we stand for. \n\n\n\nAnd so\, we embrace the spirit of Tatawaw: a Cree phrase meaning “welcome\, there is room.” \n\n\n\nThe Nextfest Arts Company acknowledges that we are situated on Treaty 6 territory\, the home of the Nations of Cree\, Nakota-Sioux\, Blackfoot\, Dene\, Tsuu T’ina\, Metis\, and other Indigenous peoples who call this land home\, who have created and gathered on these lands for thousands of years. \n\n\n\nAt Nextfest\, everyone is welcome exactly as they are. Our circle continues to grow and evolve with our artists as they grow and evolve\, too. We are still learning\, and promise to continue learning from past and future generations of artists who make Nextfest possible. \n\n\n\nWe recognize and value that we are at the end and the beginning of a long line of artists\, creators\, and people living on and benefiting from this land. Nextfest takes responsibility for this ongoing relationship as we strive to listen\, learn\, and continually do better as an organization and community. \n\n\n\nWe are committed to creating new beginnings\, supporting revival\, and providing community for everyone\, as we are all Treaty People. \n\n\n\nHave a question about a performance or piece? SUMMARY:TELUS originals FLASHBACK (2024)
DESCRIPTION:HIV Edmonton presents a screening of the new TELUS Originals feature documentary film\, Flashback (2024) at the Metro Cinema.  \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening Tangerine Productions/Flashback Film Director Peter Hays will host a discussion panel with HIV Edmonton‘s Executive Director Catherine Broomfield\, AIDS Network of Edmonton/HIV Edmonton founder Michael Phair and Queer Historian Ron Byers. \n\n\n\nIt was the Studio 54 of the Prairies\, a club that owner John Reid vowed would be a safe place for ‘gay people and their friends.’ Flashback is the story of a defiant disco dance culture of sweat and sex and drugs and fashion. \n\n\n\nLocated in a conservative northern Canadian city often hostile to queer people\, Flashback became a sensation on the international club circuit despite police raids\, threats of violence and the scourge of AIDS. \n\n\n\nFlashback is a ghost. But it comes alive again in the memories of the people who were there and the legends they left behind. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n18+ or All Ages18+ \n\n\n\nVenueMetro Cinema \n\n\n\nAddressStreet Address : 8712-109 Street N.W.City : EdmontonState/Province : AlbertaZIP / Postal Code : T6G1E9 \n\n\n\nWebsite Linkhttp://flashbackdocumentary.ca \n\n\n\nEvent Linkhttps://www.metrocinema.org/production/flashback/ \n\n\n\nTicket Linkhttps://ticketing.uswest.veezi.com/purchase/8415?siteToken=bfsmvs00k2v5xfayv313wkqpkw \n\n\n\nTicket Description #1Adult \n\n\n\nTicket Amount #1$14.50 \n\n\n\nTicket Description #2Youth (Under 18) / Student \n\n\n\nTicket Amount #2$11.50 \n\n\n\nTicket Description #3Senior \n\n\n\nTicket Amount #3$11.50 \n\n\n\nIndoor event or outdoor eventIndoors \n\n\n\nType of eventFor profit \n\n\n\nIs this event presented by a College or University for students? No \n\n\n\nEvent ContactPeter Hays \n\n\n\nEvent Contact Email Addressinfo@flashbackdocumentary.ca \n\n\n\nEvent Phone Number1 (780) 925-1212 \n\n\n\nFacebook Pagehttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100091178323657 \n\n\n\nInstagram Accounthttps://www.instagram.com/flashbackdocumentary/

SUMMARY:Michel(The)
DESCRIPTION:A production of Théâtre la Seizième \n\n\n\nTEXT AND INTERPRETATION: Joey LspéranceDIRECTED: Esther Duquette \n\n\n\nAs children\, Joey and Michel loved to put on shows for their family and friends. It was otherwise difficult to show their true colors in the working-class Quebec of the 60s and 70s where they grew up. To free themselves from this harsh reality\, Michel and his brother Joey found their way in the artistic scene. The latter pursued a prolific acting career in Vancouver\, while Michel shone on the Montreal drag scene. Then came the ultimate liberation: Michel became Michelle\, the woman she had always been\, deep down. Until the day when external forces got the better of her true identity. Is it possible to truly flourish when we don’t fit the roles that society imposes on us?  \n\n\n\nThis first autobiographical solo by actor Joey Lespérance paints a portrait of a courageous and marginal journey full of contrasts. In a refined staging by Esther Duquette\, this powerful speech by the Vancouver artist brings to life the lost dream of his “brother” Michel(le)\, who always wanted to do theater.  \n\n\n\n\nTheater\n\n\n\n$35.00 including $3.00 fees\n\n\n\nJune 28-29\, 2024\n\n\n\n80 minutes\n\n\n\nSERVUS Credit Union Theatre\n\n\n\nNot recommended for young children\n\n\n\n\nTicket Link:https://lunitheatre.online.red61.ca/fr/event/601:5198/ \n\n\n\nWebsite Link: https://www.lunitheatre.ca/fr/evenements/2023/5/24/aalaapii-bdh8r \n\n\n\n\nFriday June 28\, 2024 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday June 29\, 2024 7:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nServus Credit Union Theater8627 Rue Marie-Anne Gaboury Edmonton\, AB\, T6C 3N1 (map)

SUMMARY:Pride Film Night
DESCRIPTION:Pride Film Night presents –‘Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol’ and ‘To Wong Foo\, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar \n\n\n\nJoin us on June 15 for a special Pride screening of two iconic films: Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol and camp classic To Wong Foo\, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.  We will be screening both films in our Ledcor Theatre. Watch either film for $10 or both films for $15. Members to the AGA are Free. This Pride Screening is part of the AGA’s programming celebrating Pride Month for the LGBTQ2SIA* community. We are also featuring a biographical film about Andy Warhol in recognition of our new exhibition From Warhol to Banksy.  \n\n\n\n6pm | Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol\n\n\n\nA look at the life\, work\, and impact of Andy Warhol (1928-1987)\, pop icon and artist\, from his childhood in Pittsburgh to his surprising death. Warhol coined the word “superstar\,” became one\, and changed the way the culture looks at and understands celebrity.  \n\n\n\n8pm | To Wong Foo\, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar  \n\n\n\nThis film is a 1995 American road comedy film directed by Beeban Kidron and starring Wesley Snipes\, Patrick Swayze\, and John Leguizamo as three New York City drag queens who embark on a road trip.  \n\n\n\nPlease note: These films are for mature audiences and contain scenes of drug use\, brief nudity\, discriminatory language and violence. Please note that these films are a product of their time\, both being released in the 90s. Some language used to describe the LGBTQ2SIA* is now considered out of date. As one of the first Hollywood films about the Drag Community\, To Wong Foo\, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar is a camp classic\, but it’s important to also be aware that this representation is out of date and is flawed. Our audience is asked to be mindful of this when watching the film. There is no food or drink in the theatre\, but we do allow bottled water.  \n\n\n\nAbout Film Night: Film Night is part of AGA’s public programming that highlights themes from current exhibitions or social and cultural affairs. Join us on the second Thursday of each month for a screening of film that may be missed on the big screen. If you would like to be notified about upcoming films or to suggest a film for screening\, please email Michael at Michael.Goto.Magnussen@youraga.ca. SUMMARY:ROSIE: A Film Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:MacEwan Library and kihêw waciston\, in collaboration with the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity and Nursing’s Bear Healing Lodge\, welcome ALL to a free screening and discussion of ROSIE. \n\n\n\nA feature film debut by Métis writer-director-actor\, Gail Maurice\, ROSIE tells the story of a young\, orphaned\, Indigenous girl forced to live with her reluctant\, street-smart Aunty Fred (Frédérique). ROSIE is an unconventional love story. A drama with poignant and comedic moments\, this film is about the resilience of a child and the beauty of love and acceptance. It’s about alienation\, identity\, and the revelation that we are all capable of love. It’s a story about fringe dwellers\, society’s “throwaways\,” struggling to survive against all odds. It’s about finding your chosen family and seeking “treasures” in trash. \n\n\n\nHonoured by imagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival\, and named by TIFF as a Canada Top Ten pick in 2022\, ROSIE is not a film to miss! \n\n\n\nBannock and tea will be served\, and a community-guided conversation will follow the screening. \n\n\n\n18+ or All AgesAll ages \n\n\n\nVenueRoom 6-214\, MacEwan University \n\n\n\nAddressStreet Address : 10700 – 104 AvenueCity : EdmontonState/Province : AlbertaZIP / Postal Code : \n\n\n\nWebsite Linkhttps://MacEwan.ca/CSGD \n\n\n\nEvent Linkhttps://www.macewan.ca/campus-life/events/details/?eventid=2023/06/indigenous-rosie-film \n\n\n\nTicket Description #1No tix required.
