Millicent was also one of the creators of Flashback—a gay club here in Edmonton back in the 70s—and was the first Mz. Flashback/winner of the club’s drag pageant. The only Queen in history to hold both ISCWR and Flashback titles simultaneously just happened to be the one and only Empress Millicent. \n\n\n\nABOUT IMPERIAL SOVEREIGN COURT OF THE WILD ROSE (ISCWR)\n\n\n\nThe ISCWR is our local sovereign chapter of the International Court System and a non-profit organization formed in 1976. Their mission is to raise funds for charities and other organizations which either provide direct service to the 2SLGBTQ+ community of Edmonton or organizations which work to promote an accepting attitude toward people of all sexual and gender minorities. The core of its existence is based on delivering entertainment\, primarily through drag queens performing lip-synced numbers in glamorous and often over-the-top costuming. DESCRIPTION:Pride Day at K-Days\n\n\n\nJoin us on the K-Days Midway for another exciting day of queer joy at the fair! \n\n\n\nStart off at 12:30 with a Drag Queen Storytime and then enjoy the rides until the afternoon’s multiple drag showcases begin – including the Dancing Kings\, Haus of Art\, Legends of Drag\, a FrancoQueer Drag showcase\, an IndigiHauz drag showcase\, and more \n\n\n\nMore than a dozen local 2SLGBTQ+ Non-profits will be on site in the Silver Slipper Saloon from 3PM – 9PM for the return of our Pride Resource Fair! Local queer DJs will be playing in both the Silver Slipper Saloon and the Golden Garter Speakeasy as well! \n\n\n\nFree concerts on the South Stage will be happening in the evening (See event schedule below) but the day doesn’t end after they’re done\, because the House of Hymen has a special late night adults only show in the Cristal Palace Spiegeltent\, tickets on sale now! DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special tour focused on Edmonton’s 2SLGBTQ+ community bars and bathhouses. Our tour begins at the location of the infamous 1981 police raid of the Pisces Health Spa\, which resulted in the largest mass arrest in Alberta’s history! The raid had the unintended effect of launching Michael Phair’s legendary career of activism\, including becoming the first openly gay politician in Alberta’s history and a 15-year run on Edmonton’s city council. \n\n\n\nThis tour will be hosted by Michael Phair and Rob Browatzke. \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to be able to provide ASL interpretation for this walking tour. From the 1982 festival in response to the Pisces Spa raid through the struggle to get a proclamation from the City to the recent years of community division on how Pride should look\, the story of the festival is reflective of the changing nature not only of how our community fits into broader society but also what Pride even means. \n\n\n\nRob Browatzke has been professionally active within Edmonton’s queer community since the late 90s\, with a resume filled with gay bars of days gone by. For the last decade\, he has been one of the owners of Edmonton’s only gay bar\, Evolution Wonderlounge. He is also a researcher for the Edmonton Queer History Project\, a writer for Rainbow Story Hub\, published author\, volunteer\, advocate\, and really\, professional homosexual. \n\n\n\n@robbrowatzke – Bird App@robbrowatzke – Instagram \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGabriela Constantinescu: Taking the “dys” out of dysphagia: How to drink beer and not choke on it\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJune is Dysphagia Awareness month. In this talk\, we’ll cover what it means to not be able to swallow\, who is affected\, and what we can all do to help a little bit. \n\n\n\nGabi is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at the University of Alberta and Chief Experience Officer for True Angle\, a local startup. Gabi started off as a speech language pathologist working in the clinic where she amassed over a decade of experience assessing and treating speech\, voice\, resonance\, and swallowing difficulties in patients with head and neck cancer. Gabi then went on to obtain her PhD\, where her research directly influenced the design and development of a mobile system for swallowing exercise. Gabi continues to engage in educational activities such as this one to raise awareness for those living with swallowing difficulties. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHarry MacDonald: Producing Drum and Bass Music: What goes into making a song?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHave you ever wondered what goes into producing a song? In this chat I’ll be going over my approach to writing songs and where I get inspiration to start music. As well\, I’ll show what kind of work goes into the fine details of processing the song to get it to the final result. \n\n\n\nHarry MacDonald is a drum and bass producer from Edmonton\, one of the co-owners of Umbral Sound System which has hosted underground dance music events all over the city featuring their custom built sound system. DESCRIPTION:ELEN‘s meet-up nights return at Fargos–just in time for Pride Month! This is another casual pub mixer for YEG’s Sapphically inclined\, 2Spirit\, Trans and Non-Binary populations. We will have a few small\, opt-in activities to facilitate mingling and meeting each other. The theme is: “SHOW US YOUR PRIDE“! We will be recapping and featuring some of the fabulous events coming up this summer for our community. There will be prizes\, Pride games and giveaways! \n\n\n\nOur venue partner Fargos offers food and drink specials\, pool\, free parking and there is no entry-fee. DESCRIPTION:They called it Canada’s Studio 54. The infamous Flashback nightclub was established by owner John Reid as a celebratory haven for ‘gay people and their friends’ in the tumultuous 1980s. After it closed in 1991 the club’s iconic neon sign was lost from the public view – until now. \n\n\n\nThe Alberta Sign Association is currently restoring the sign\, and it will be raised on a wall of the Mercer Building as part of the Neon Sign Museum at 104th Street and 104th Avenue N.W. on June 17\, 2023. \n\n\n\nFrom Disco to New Wave\, from the Pisces bathhouse raid to the HIV epidemic – Flashback saw it all. And now we will all once again be able to see and enjoy the Flashback sign as it is properly honored on the same block where the original nightclub’s 104th Street location once stood. \n\n\n\nTo add to the excitement\, this beautiful sign and the legendary club it represents are the subject of a new feature documentary film funded by TELUS originals that will premiere in 2024. \n\n\n\nJoin us from 2-4 p.m. on June 17\, 2023 to celebrate a fabulous queer-owned business that changed Edmonton’s culture and put our city on the map among the club set from Los Angeles to London. \n\n\n\nThis event will feature special guest speakers David Shepherd (MLA\, Edmonton-City Centre)\, Janis Irwin (MLA\, Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood) & Brooks Arcand-Paul (MLA-Elect\, Edmonton-West Henday\, President of the Alberta Sign Association – Erik Houde and the City Of Edmonton Senior Heritage Planner overseeing the Neon Sign Museum – David Johnston.
