DESCRIPTION:Queer Horizons Speaker Series • Past\, Present and Future:The Evolution of Trans and Gender Diverse People’s Rights in CanadaMarch 14\, 2024 | 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. | Roundhouse | Allard HallLearn about Trans and gender-diverse people in a historical context with a focus on the evolution of discussions and debates about human rights. ASL provided. \n\n\n\nThe landscape for Trans and gender-diverse people has evolved and changed in numerous ways over the years. There is a rich and oftentimes little-known understanding of and knowledge about the history of Trans and gender-diverse people. \n\n\n\nThough an emerging dialogue\, there is little discussion about how that history can inform the struggles and challenges faced by Trans and gender-diverse people today. Currently\, there is a discussion about a gender revolution happening in Canada\, where a number of provinces have published statements affirming the need to improve health care for Trans and gender-diverse people. However\, simultaneously\, six provinces have passed anti-trans and gender-diverse legislation\, specifically focusing on restricting gender-affirming care and education for youth. \n\n\n\nThe goal of this presentation will be to put current discussions and debates about Trans and gender-diverse people in a historical context with a focus on the evolution of the discussions and debates about trans and gender-diverse human rights. DESCRIPTION:Leonard “Len” Keith and Joseph “Cub” Coates were a queer couple in the rural New Brunswick village of Havelock in the early 20th century. Len & Cub features Len’s photos of their life and tells the story of their relationship against the background of same-sex identity and relationships in rural North America of the early 20th century. While keeping their sexual identities closeted\, they captured their decades-long relationship via photographs. This remarkable material is as important socially and historically as their story is one of the oldest photographic records of a same-sex couple in the Maritimes.  \n\n\n\nWe invite you to witness the unique love\, friendship and lives of Len & Cub to challenge contemporary ideas of about sex and gender expression in the early 20th century. \n\n\n\nCurated by Meredith J. Our friendly guides will explain everything you need to know before we start\, but you’re looking at a 90-minute guided walking tour\, rain or shine\, and our knowledgeable guides encourage interaction and are able to tailor the talk to the group. \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to be able to provide ASL interpretation for this walking tour. In fact\, don’t ever touch anyone without consent.\n\n\n\n\nDragging Youth (est 2016) is a 100% volunteer organization. Family Friendly monthly all age drag shows\, plus more support throughout the month. A place for all ages (young and old together) to perform\, relax\, enjoy\, find mentorship\, and friends in a 2SLGBTQQIA+ safe environment\, while we raise funds for 2SLGBTQQIA+ youth initiatives and other great causes. \n\n\n\nThe Unitarian Church of Edmonton is a sponsor of Dragging Youth Shows. Dragging Youth has monthly Shows at the Unitarian Church of Edmonton (UCE). UCE has no stairs going into the building or to public areas. There is a button operated door at the front. A lovely ramp for performers to get on stage. Plus accessible\, gender neutral washrooms.  Chairs in the Sanctuary are easily moved to accommodate various needs.  UCE also has a quiet room where shows can be viewed with decreased stimulus. DESCRIPTION:Over this 1.5 hour course you’ll learn the basics drag king makeup\, from the iconic king\, Orpheus! (As seen on multiple events around Edmonton) He gives overviews of specialized products\, in depth tutorials\, and shares all the tricks of the trade to help demystify the artform. After taking the course you’ll feel equipped and empowered to start making creative looks of your own! \n\n\n\nOrpheus will show all the products you need to paint a drag face and explain how to best apply them. They will discuss the principles behind contouring for a male illusion and they will share a guide they made of masculine contouring patterns\, and explain how different shapes convey different things about your drag persona. Participants will follow a step by step how you paint a natural looking male illusion. \n\n\n\nThis class is BYOM (Bring your own make-up).  \n\n\n\nWe will supply you with a list of products in advance of the class and they can be purchased at Theatre Garage.
