August 23 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm MDT

Join us for this special bonus tour as we go west of downtown and explore the vibrant queer life on 124st and Jasper Ave. Meet us at Remedy on 124 st as we highlight the history of forgotten bars like Buddys Pub and DiNovi’s Lounge and celebrate community coffee shops like Boystown and Conrad’s Sugar Bowl. Your tour guides will be Rob Browatzke (Co-Owner of Evolution Wonderlounge) and Godiva (former Buddys Beauty and Woodys manager).

ASL interpretation is available by request for each tour. We require at least one week notification prior to each tour date to enable us to arrange for interpreters. Please email: EdmontonQueerHistoryProject@gmail.com with your ASL request.

The 2023 Spring/Summer EQHP Walking Tour Series is made possible thanks to funding and support provided by the MacEwan Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity, Edmonton Downtown Business Association, and the City of Edmonton.

Nerd Nite #74: Pride Month and More

Happy Pride Month!

Did you know that June is also Dysphagia Awareness Month?
Do you know what dysphagia is?
Sure, you could hop on Wikipedia to find out, but why not come hang out with us and hear about it in person.

When: Thursday June 29th, 2023, at 7:30 pm

(Doors & bar open at 7:00 pm and the Fringe Grounds Cafe is open until 8:00!)

Where: Studio Theatre at Fringe Theatre Adventures

Fringe Theatre Arts Barn, 10330 84 Ave NW, Edmonton

How much: $25

Rob Browatzke: History of Edmonton Pride

For over forty years, Edmonton’s LGBT2Q communities have come together to celebrate Pride, but they have been celebrations marked by their struggles. From the 1982 festival in response to the Pisces Spa raid through the struggle to get a proclamation from the City to the recent years of community division on how Pride should look, the story of the festival is reflective of the changing nature not only of how our community fits into broader society but also what Pride even means.

Rob Browatzke has been professionally active within Edmonton’s queer community since the late 90s, with a resume filled with gay bars of days gone by. For the last decade, he has been one of the owners of Edmonton’s only gay bar, Evolution Wonderlounge. He is also a researcher for the Edmonton Queer History Project, a writer for Rainbow Story Hub, published author, volunteer, advocate, and really, professional homosexual.

Gabriela Constantinescu: Taking the “dys” out of dysphagia: How to drink beer and not choke on it

June is Dysphagia Awareness month. In this talk, we’ll cover what it means to not be able to swallow, who is affected, and what we can all do to help a little bit.

Gabi is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at the University of Alberta and Chief Experience Officer for True Angle, a local startup. Gabi started off as a speech language pathologist working in the clinic where she amassed over a decade of experience assessing and treating speech, voice, resonance, and swallowing difficulties in patients with head and neck cancer. Gabi then went on to obtain her PhD, where her research directly influenced the design and development of a mobile system for swallowing exercise. Gabi continues to engage in educational activities such as this one to raise awareness for those living with swallowing difficulties.

Harry MacDonald: Producing Drum and Bass Music: What goes into making a song?

Have you ever wondered what goes into producing a song? In this chat I’ll be going over my approach to writing songs and where I get inspiration to start music. As well, I’ll show what kind of work goes into the fine details of processing the song to get it to the final result.

Harry MacDonald is a drum and bass producer from Edmonton, one of the co-owners of Umbral Sound System which has hosted underground dance music events all over the city featuring their custom built sound system. He has releases on record labels spanning from Alberta to the UK.

ROSIE: A Film Screening and Conversation

June 8 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm MDT

MacEwan Library and kihêw waciston, in collaboration with the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity and Nursing’s Bear Healing Lodge, welcome ALL to a free screening and discussion of ROSIE.

A feature film debut by Métis writer-director-actor, Gail MauriceROSIE tells the story of a young, orphaned, Indigenous girl forced to live with her reluctant, street-smart Aunty Fred (Frédérique). ROSIE is an unconventional love story. A drama with poignant and comedic moments, this film is about the resilience of a child and the beauty of love and acceptance. It’s about alienation, identity, and the revelation that we are all capable of love. It’s a story about fringe dwellers, society’s “throwaways,” struggling to survive against all odds. It’s about finding your chosen family and seeking “treasures” in trash.

Honoured by imagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival, and named by TIFF as a Canada Top Ten pick in 2022, ROSIE is not a film to miss!

Bannock and tea will be served, and a community-guided conversation will follow the screening.

Pride Film Night

June 15 @ 6:00 pm 10:00 pm MDT

Pride Film Night presents –
‘Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol’ and ‘To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar

Join us on June 15 for a special Pride screening of two iconic films: Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol and camp classic To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.  We will be screening both films in our Ledcor Theatre. Watch either film for $10 or both films for $15. Members to the AGA are Free. This Pride Screening is part of the AGA’s programming celebrating Pride Month for the LGBTQ2SIA* community. We are also featuring a biographical film about Andy Warhol in recognition of our new exhibition From Warhol to Banksy.

6pm | Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol

A look at the life, work, and impact of Andy Warhol (1928-1987), pop icon and artist, from his childhood in Pittsburgh to his surprising death. Warhol coined the word “superstar,” became one, and changed the way the culture looks at and understands celebrity.

8pm | To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar

This film is a 1995 American road comedy film directed by Beeban Kidron and starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo as three New York City drag queens who embark on a road trip.

Please note: These films are for mature audiences and contain scenes of drug use, brief nudity, discriminatory language and violence. Please note that these films are a product of their time, both being released in the 90s. Some language used to describe the LGBTQ2SIA* is now considered out of date. As one of the first Hollywood films about the Drag Community, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar is a camp classic, but it’s important to also be aware that this representation is out of date and is flawed. Our audience is asked to be mindful of this when watching the film. There is no food or drink in the theatre, but we do allow bottled water.

About Film Night: Film Night is part of AGA’s public programming that highlights themes from current exhibitions or social and cultural affairs. Join us on the second Thursday of each month for a screening of film that may be missed on the big screen. If you would like to be notified about upcoming films or to suggest a film for screening, please email Michael at Michael.Goto.Magnussen@youraga.ca. Alternatively, you can subscribe to our E-News or follow us @youraga on social media to get the latest news.
