His life changed history. His courage changed lives. Harvey Milk is a middle-aged New Yorker who, after moving to San Francisco, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977. His election makes him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the United States. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his
resignation from the board. Based on the inspiring true story of Harvey Milk.
To celebrate Pride Month, EPL is proud to present Olympic gold medalist Mark Tewksbury for an inspiring evening of conversation on sport, identity and the power of inclusion. As Canada’s first openly gay Olympian, Mark’s courageous coming out sparked national dialogue and helped pave the way for greater visibility and acceptance in sport.
Mark will share stories from his athletic career, reflect on the challenges and triumphs of advocacy, and explore the ongoing importance of equity, diversity, and 2SLGBTQ+ rights. From speaking at the United Nations to mentoring athletes competing in challenging global environments, his journey highlights the impact of standing up for fairness and belonging.
This event is presented in partnership with Edmonton Community Foundation and Friends of the Edmonton Public Library.

On Friday June 12, we open the fourth book in the series – on Workplace Inclusion. NDP MLAs Janis Irwin and Brooks Arcand-Paul will explore the topic from their unique positions of employment. Drawing on personal stories and experiences, their sharing will help the audience understand the importance of the inclusion of 2SLGBTQIA+ and other marginalized identities in the workplace, and how best to advocate for such. Bring your curiosity and questions to ask, and stick around after the formal presentations to engage in meaningful small group table conversation and community connection over refreshments.
