It was the Studio 54 of the Prairies, a club that owner John Reid vowed would be a safe place for ‘gay people and their friends.’ Flashback is the story of a defiant disco dance culture of sweat and sex and drugs and fashion.
Located in a conservative northern Canadian city often hostile to queer people, Flashback became a sensation on the international club circuit despite police raids, threats of violence and the scourge of AIDS.
Flashback is a ghost. But it comes alive again in the memories of the people who were there and the legends they left behind

We will be welcoming diverse vendors, local organizations and community leaders in a space safe for the whole family. We'll have lots of arts & crafts, interactive zones, activities and outdoor games, photo ops, a barbeque, music, silent auction and much more. After this day of fun, stick around for another terrific monthly show from Dragging Youth. This revue of talented amateur and experienced performers is for Orange Shirt Day and benefits Edmonton 2Spirit Society.

2024 Edmonton Queer History Month
City Of Edmonton #1, Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton, AB, CanadaQueer History Month in Canada is a relatively recent initiative that aligns with global efforts to recognize and celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ history. Like similar movements in the U.S. and the U.K., the development of Queer History Month in Canada reflects the country’s unique history of 2SLGBTQ+ rights, activism, and social change.
Recently, Edmonton-based organization Rainbow Story Hub Foundation started the conversation of formalizing Queer History Month as a national observance across Canada.
In the meantime, there is growing community momentum to share these stories – including right here, in our city.

Pride March & Opening Ceremonies

The march is the annual kick-off to Pride Week. This year, every post-secondary institution in Edmonton will be marching across our campuses at the same time. We encourage the MacEwan community to gather representing their work areas, clubs, teams, or groups to join as we march across campus. This march is an act of celebration and solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Show your support and pride by grabbing a sign, representing your community, and marching across campus.
We will start in Griffins Landing (gathering at 11:30 a.m. and marching at noon) and walk across the pedway to Allard Hall for opening remarks. Opening remarks from campus leaders will be shared.
All are encouraged to attend. ASL interpretation will be provided at the opening ceremonies.

Queer Poetry: an afternoon with Nisha Patel
Norquest College 10215 108 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta, CanadaNisha Patel is a renowned disabled queer poet and spoken word artist. She was the City of Edmonton’s 8th Poet Laureate, a Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Champion and has several awards to her name.
She has spoken extensively on the intersections between queerness and disability and explores these topics in her creative work. Nisha will join us for an afternoon of poetry at NorQuest College, where we will hear from some of her selected works and have the opportunity to engage in conversation about the art of creative self-expression.
This event is open to members of Edmonton's post-secondary institutions (students and staff) and their guests.

Queer Horizons | Trans Inclusion in Sport: On Gender Policing, Resistance, and Joy
MacEwan Robbins Health Learning Centre 10910 104 Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta, CanadaThere is a long and problematic history of gender policing in sports through official policy and practice. This is true in elite sports as well as in recreational sports and all levels in between. In this talk, we will discuss this history as well as current provincial policy (Bill 29), with a particular focus on the impacts on trans and gender-diverse folks, but also cisgender girls and women. Of course, where discriminatory restrictions exist, so do examples of resiliency, resistance, and joy; accordingly, we will share insights from research and our own experiences. Everyone belongs in sport.

PIE day at RWUC
Robertson-Wesley United Church 10209 123 St NW, Edmonton, Alberta, CanadaPIE stands for Public, Intentional, and Explicit. These are the attitudes and actions required to be truly affirming. As recognition of Robertson Wesley's commitment as a church to the 2SLGBTQIA community, they will be hosting a free public event for PIE Day on Friday, March 14th at 5:30. This year the threat to young trans and gender expansive individuals is especially at risk with the provincial legislation currently in progress, therefore any funds raised will be shared between RW’s affirming ministries and Egale Canada who, with Skipping Stone and several families, are suing the AB government for unconstitutional discrimination regarding these specific bills, particularly bill 26 which became law Dec 5, 2024.
The event itself is free (donations happily accepted) and will feature delicious pie, community networking, socializing, empowering words and a variety show of local performers. All are welcome!

Becoming Conscious Allies

This workshop by Rae Madge from the University of Alberta’s Fyrefly Institute for Gender and Sexual Diversity is an introduction to sex and gender identities, expressions and orientations. We will talk about common assumptions and myths and try to expand our understanding of these topics so that we can become better allies and advocates. Registration is not required, but please bring some paper and a pen for taking notes!
